Ambassador (ret.) Dr. Heusgen joined the German Foreign Service in 1980. After serving at the German Consulate in Chicago and the German Embassy in Paris, he was appointed Personal Assistant to the Coordinator for German-French Cooperation in 1988. From 1993 to 1997, he worked in the office of Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel, followed by two years as Head of the Europe Division at the Federal Foreign Office.
From 1999 to 2005, Dr. Heusgen led the Political Directorate of the High Representative for the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana. Beginning in 2005, he advised Chancellor Angela Merkel on foreign and security policy and served as Director-General for Foreign Policy at the German Chancellery. In 2017, he was appointed Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations in New York, where he chaired the UN Security Council in April 2019 and July 2020.
After retiring from the Foreign Service, Heusgen led the Munich Security Conference until February 2025. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Daniel Barenboim Foundation.
Dr. Christoph Heusgen earned his degree and doctorate from the University of St. Gallen and also studied at Georgia Southern College in the United States and the Sorbonne in Paris.
